Winter CSA: Week 9 of 11

Week 9 of 11

Hi Reader,

The greenhouse season has officially begun on the farm. Onions are planted, and the first flowers have been seeded, with broccoli, cabbage, and lettuce not far behind.

Summer CSA shares are filling up, and we’re approaching 200 members for the season. Pig shares have also sold out for the year—thank you to everyone who reserved one.

Around the Farm

Right now, the greenhouse mostly looks like a bunch of trays of soil.

The first seeds are in, but nothing is popping up just yet. This time of year requires a bit of patience. These false-warm days are lovely, but plants need consistent warmth to germinate and grow well. One sunny afternoon isn’t enough to convince them it’s time.

Outside, the garlic is starting to poke out of the ground. Hopefully, a little snow will come along to insulate it a bit before the next cold stretch.

For the next few weeks, a lot of our work will be planting, watering, and waiting. The greenhouse slowly fills with trays, and then, one day, the whole space turns green almost overnight.

For now, though, it’s still the quiet part of the season, even though this wind is frying our nerves!
