Nothing big has changed — same shares, same quality, same philosophy, and we are excited about how this season is shaping up.
We already have so many returning members jumping in early and a few promising new host locations forming, which always makes spring feel a little closer.
We’re also accepting credit cards again! There’s a 3% processing fee we can add on to cover more of the cost, but the structure and share sizes remain the same.
(And just a reminder: no Thursday pickups this year, everything else stays familiar.)
Thank you to everyone who has already signed up— early registrations genuinely help us plan staffing, planting, and pickup locations more than you probably realize. It makes this whole Spring-thing feel real again!
Around the Farm
Last time, we finally brought the Black Spanish Radishes out of Carl. (Carl is our 40-foot retired cargo reefer, newly installed this fall as a replacement for the coolers we are losing in the construction mess.)
In the winter pic I shared, Carl is quietly sitting behind our temporary Packshed (the building where we clean your veggies), nestled by the hoophouses and skeletons thereof. I can't remember if we've ever talked about Carl?
No, we didn't name it... exactly. The previous owner (?) had written "Carl" on the front, back, and side of it. Not graffiti, more like "hey- this is a reminder that Carl needs this thing!" Anyway, rather than calling it Storage Container #537 or something... we call it Carl.
Anyway, two weeks ago or so, we finally pulled some Black Spanish Radishes out of Carl. Then, at market, they were easily the most asked-about thing on the table: “What is that?” - “Why is it so black?” - “Is it just… a normal radish?”
Not exactly.
These are storage radishes — a completely different category from the spring radishes, though in the plant world, pretty much the same thing. They’re grown to mature in the fall and then hold for months without getting spongy or hollow. Before refrigeration, vegetables like this were how people kept eating fresh food all winter, and honestly, they still do the job remarkably well.
Raw, they’re sharp and a little wild. But cooked, they mellow dramatically — almost potato-like when roasted, great in soups, and surprisingly good shaved thin with butter and salt. I actually found an article about them on Food 52, too!
Pulling the weirdest of weird veggies from Carl always marks a certain point in the season for us. We’re not growing quickly yet, but we’re also no longer just coasting on the fall harvest. We’re bridging seasons now — storage crops coming out while seed orders, host planning, and CSA signups pick up speed.
Spring still isn’t here… but it’s no longer hypothetical either, just like CSA signup!

Look at this cool cup Sophia and her mother made! Sophia has worked for us on and off for the last couple of years after graduating from Oberlin, and is looking forward to a future in a Mathematics-related field. The cup is getting used heavily, as we are still deep in office work mode.
