The recent rain arrived at just the right time, overnight and gently. We spent plenty of time watching the forecast over the last week, and it was a welcome boost for both crops and farmers alike.
A scene from the tractor driver's POV. A side-by-side pulls a wagon with thousands of pepper plants, a huge tank of water sits in the distance waiting, and peppers settle into their home below, clear, blue skies.
With temperatures expected to climb later this week, we need to start getting serious about setting up irrigation season. For now, we're grateful for the rain that nature provided.
One of the surest signs that spring is beginning to give way to summer is the arrival of strawberries. While our longtime Amish partner is no longer growing them, we're excited to once again offer strawberries from Felzke Farms. The cooler spring weather delayed the season slightly, but they're finally here and tasting every bit as sweet as we've been waiting for.
Out in the fields, we're still planting. Every year, there comes a point when it feels like we should be done, and every year, the list somehow keeps growing. We can finally see the finish line, though, with perhaps another week or two of major planting remaining. At the same time, the weeds certainly haven't received the memo. As soon as one crop is planted, another section needs attention, and the cycle continues.
That's the nature of this season on the farm. One crop finishes, another begins. Spring greens give way to summer vegetables. Empty greenhouse space fills with the next round of transplants. The work changes, but it never really stops.
For now, we're focusing on staying caught up, keeping things moving forward, and enjoying the small signs that summer is arriving (and stuffing our faces with strawberries!).

The cucumbers are coming along nicely! We planted them a little later than wanted, and they'll need to be weeded soon, but almost all 2000 of them are going strong!
