Reminder: Spring CSA pickups are still only on Fridays and Saturdays, even though the summer farmers market season has begun. We will begin attending the Wednesday markets starting in July.
The store has also changed a bit since this morning, as we heard back specifically from the folks with asparagus, cucumbers, and basil.
Around the Farm
If you've driven by recently, you may have noticed that the fields are starting to fill in.
Oh, hello baby kale. You're almost big enough to eat!
Most days right now are split between planting, weeding, and watering. While we'd certainly welcome a good soaking rain, the forecast is looking fairly dry this week, so irrigation systems are becoming the focus of our attention. A crop can survive being weeded a little late, but not too long without water.
This week, we will plant our final round of fall storage crops. It always feels a little strange to be planning for October while we're still gnawing down on asparagus, but that's how farming works. If we want pumpkins, winter squash, and storage crops later in the year, June is when many of those decisions get made.
The greenhouse finally feels like it's emptying out a bit, though, which is always a relief. Of course, every empty bench seems to immediately fill back up with another round of seedlings.
The weeds are still keeping us humble, but our crew has made great progress tackling some of the worst areas on the farm. This time of year often feels like a race between the vegetables and the weeds, and we're doing our best to make sure the vegetables stay ahead.
As always, thank you for supporting local agriculture and joining us for the journey through the seasons. We hope you enjoy another week of spring harvests while they're here!
The Menu
Please customize your share by the deadline if you want to choose your items. If you don’t customize, we’ll pack a Farmer’s Choice share for you, but we may reach out before we do so.
Items in red with an asterisk* are the Farmer's Choice for this week.
Choose up to 25 credits for Spring Veggie Shares.
Items marked “storage” were harvested last fall and held in our coolers for winter and spring shares. This is a normal part of seasonal eating in Michigan, and it helps bridge the gap until more fresh field crops are ready.
