Around the Farm
Over the last couple of weeks, the farm has suddenly shifted from “spring cleanup” into full planting season. Everywhere you look now, there are tiny weeds popping up, grass growing faster than we can mow it, and trays upon trays upon trays of plants waiting to go into the ground.
A cold day to transplant, but they did it! This is the machine we use to transplant 80% of what we grow- the Water Wheel. It has made life so much easier.
Right now, most of our days are centered around planting- putting seeds into the soil, transplanting crops, and then waiting (sometimes impatiently) to see what grows faster: the weeds or the crop.
Earlier today, we managed to get another round of carrots planted just before the rain started moving in. We debated the radar for a while before calling it a day once the storm looked less cooperative.
We also finally got our first kale planting into the field last week, along with cucumbers and lisianthus in the hoophouses. At this point in May, it feels like the farm changes a little every single day. (Almost as quickly as the weather around here! Sheesh!)
The Menu
Spring CSA menus are more weather-dependent than summer menus, especially in the first couple of weeks. We’ll do our best to give you a good mix, but early spring naturally leans toward greens, storage roots, and cool-season items.
Please customize your share by the deadline if you want to choose your items. If you don’t customize, we’ll pack a Farmer’s Choice share for you.
Items in red with an asterisk* are the Farmer's Choice for this week.
Choose up to 25 credits for Spring Veggie Shares.
Items marked “storage” were harvested last fall and held in our coolers for winter and spring shares. This is a normal part of seasonal eating in Michigan, and it helps bridge the gap until more fresh field crops are ready.
